A sculptural Italian desk lamp of generous scale, the Calotta or Vertebra Model 660 was designed by Elio Martinelli and produced by Martinelli Luce in 1972. Conceived as an oversized and playful reinterpretation of a desk lamp, it is molded in vivid red plastic with a hemispherical shade and a ribbed circular base, the latter marked on the underside. The two elements are linked by a segmented, vertebra-like arm built around aluminium joints that allows the shade to be gently directed; while the articulated spine suggests great flexibility, its movement is more modest in practice, as the vertebrae are as much decorative as functional. The plastic surfaces show light scratches from use, and the arm displays some discoloration, consistent with age and the nature of the material.

Rooted in the optimistic spirit of early 1970s Space Age design, Martinelli’s work embraced new plastics and expressive biomorphic forms while prioritizing function. The Vertebra model became an icon of Italian industrial design, reflecting the period’s fascination with ergonomics and modular construction.
