This large French wool tapestry, titled Camargue and dated 1981, was designed by Raymond Poulet (born 1934), a French painter known for his colorful, expressive compositions. It depicts the famous black bulls of the Camargue crossing the shallow waters of the marshes at sunset, while white birds sweep across the glowing sky. Warm shades of ocher, apricot and gold contrast beautifully with the deep charcoal and violet tones of the animals and reeds, their reflections rendered in bold, graphic lines. Woven on a Jacquard loom, it was produced for Jean Laurent, a master weaver associated with Aubusson tapestry. This example is numbered 23 from an edition of 500 and retains its certificate, dated February 5, 1981, with the artist's signature. Poulet's signature is also woven into the lower left corner. The tapestry can be hung using four natural rope loops along the top edge and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
The rich sunset colors and expressive drawing beautifully capture the wild, open character of the Camargue, with its vast wetlands, free-roaming bulls and abundant birdlife. There is something evocative of travel and faraway places in this peaceful yet lively scene, inviting the viewer to imagine the unique landscapes of southern France. Its generous horizontal format would make a beautiful focal point above a sofa or long sideboard, particularly in a room with aged wood, natural linens and earthy tones, adding a lovely sense of serenity and permanence.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
