A substantial 19th-century artist’s studio easel crafted in solid oak, featuring an original hand-crank mechanism allowing the canvas support to be adjusted easily in height. With its strong architectural lines, aged timber and authentic traces of studio use, the piece has the sculptural presence so characteristic of antique atelier furniture. The central support rises between sturdy uprights, while the lower canvas rest is raised and lowered via the original metal crank handle and internal screw mechanism. The easel stands on discreet castors, allowing it to be moved with ease despite its generous scale. Particularly appealing are the richly worn surfaces and layers of paint splatters accumulated over decades of artistic use. These marks of time give the easel remarkable texture and authenticity, beautifully contrasting with the warm oak patina. Structurally sound and full of character, with wear consistent with age and studio use adding to its undeniable charm, this piece would make a wonderful statement in an artist’s studio, library, gallery space or living room with a subtly bohemian spirit.
