A finely crafted 19th century novelty cane, featuring a light bamboo or reed shaft topped with a striking silvered metal handle in the form of Marianne, emblem of the French Republic. The bust is delicately modelled, with softly detailed facial features and the characteristic Phrygian cap, symbol of liberty.
The handle is signed and dated 1871, placing it at a significant moment in French history, just after the fall of the Second Empire and the establishment of the Third Republic. Objects bearing the image of Marianne from this period reflect a renewed sense of republican identity and civic pride.
The contrast between the natural warmth of the bamboo shaft and the refined metalwork of the handle gives the piece both elegance and character. The condition shows light wear consistent with age, with a soft patina to the metal revealing copper tones beneath.
Both a functional object and a symbolic artefact, this cane would make a distinctive addition to a collection of historical memorabilia or canes, and an evocative decorative piece.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
