A striking decorative grotesque head carved from lightweight cork. The face is boldly modeled with inflated cheeks, a puckered, whistling mouth, and tightly spiraled curls, resulting in an exaggerated and highly expressive physiognomy. Inset sulfur-colored glass eyes give the sculpture a vivid sense of character and animation. The surface retains a soft, stone-like gray finish with a gently timeworn patina with a few chips adding to its antique character.
Likely French or Italian from the 19th-century, this work belongs to the tradition of theatrical stage décor, where cork and papier-mâché were commonly used for their light weight and workability. Such materials were chosen for scenic effect rather than permanence, enabling expressive forms to be installed at height or within elaborate stage settings.
Now presented on a later metal stand, the piece remains stable and visually compelling. Minor chips to the nose and scattered surface wear are consistent with age and long display. Sculptural, playful, and richly expressive, it reads today as a distinctive decorative accent with strong personality and historical presence, bringing a touch of wit and drama to an interior.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
