A charming child-size milliner’s mannequin head, hand formed in papier-mâché and painted in soft polychrome tones. The serene face features large blue eyes, a pale complexion, and softly tinted lips, framed by painted black locks of hair. A painted aubergine-colored bodice with black laced detail further enhances the piece’s individuality and graphic presence. Dating to the late 19th century, this smaller-scale example was intended for children’s caps and bonnets, a rarer format within the tradition.
Such mannequin heads first appeared in the late 18th century and were used on workshop tables to keep headwear pressed and properly shaped between wearings. Each was individually painted, with distinctive facial features, clothing details, or accessories, making every example unique. The piece remains in good, timeworn condition, with scattered paint losses and a small surface chip to the nose, retaining an appealing patina that reflects decades of careful use.
Displayed on a console, dressing table, or bookcase, it reads beautifully as a sculptural accent and is especially effective when grouped with other mannequin heads or folk objects for a layered, collected look. It may also serve as a poetic support for a bonnet, ribbon, or necklace, bringing quiet character and workshop history to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
