19th Century French Empire Style Bouillotte Lamp - 26"

A French bouillotte lamp from the 19th century in bright gilt bronze, paired with a deep green painted tole shade delicately stenciled with gilt laurel bands. The circular dished base rises to a slender stem supporting three scrolling candle arms, now electrified, beneath an adjustable shade. A wreath-form finial crowns the top, and an arrow-shaped key allows the shade to be raised or lowered. The gilt bronze remains remarkably bright and luminous, beautifully highlighting the lamp’s crisp neoclassical lines. The green tole shade shows visible dents, surface scratches, and areas of paint wear, all consistent with age and long use; these imperfections lend the piece an authentic, time-earned character. 

Originally conceived for the popular French card game bouillotte, these lamps were thoughtfully designed for play: the adjustable shade could be lowered as the candles burned down, shielding players’ eyes from glare while keeping the tabletop illuminated. The broad, dished base was shaped to cradle the game’s counters and coins, preventing them from slipping and keeping the action neatly contained, a marriage of elegance and practical ingenuity. The empire green ground and gilt laurel detailing reflect the neoclassical taste of the late 18th and 19th centuries, where references to antiquity conveyed balance, order, and quiet refinement.
