This charming 19th-century French earthenware cutlery drainer is a lovely example of traditional folk pottery, probably made in the Gard, possibly in Saint-Quentin-la-Poterie. Its gently rounded body has a wide, flared rim and is covered in a soft buttery-yellow glaze, with delicate crazing and warm variations in tone. Two rows of small circular perforations encircle the upper section, creating a decorative band just beneath the rim while also serving a practical purpose, allowing the piece to be hung. The body is decorated with beautifully carved openwork rosettes, each forming a simple six-petaled flower, while the base is pierced to allow water to drain. There are chips and areas of glaze wear, and one of the rosettes is partially broken, all part of the history of this unusual piece.
Once an everyday kitchen accessory, this delightful piece of French folk art still has plenty of practical and decorative appeal today. Its cheerful yellow glaze and charming handmade decoration would add warmth and a little rustic character to a country kitchen. It could even retain its original purpose, placed beside the sink to hold cutlery or kitchen utensils, allowing water to drain through its pierced base. Alternatively, it could make a lovely candleholder, with a small candle inside casting a soft glow through the openwork rosettes.
