This 19th-century French stool has a lively and engaging character, with richly turned barley-twist legs that splay gracefully and meet at a central stretcher. The dark wood retains a deep, even patina, while the square seat is upholstered in a floral needlepoint panel framed by layered trim in warm russet and chocolate tones. Reflecting the historicist revival taste popular in the later 1800s, the piece draws on Louis XIII and medieval-inspired forms, reinterpreted for comfortable use in domestic interiors.
The seat lifts open to reveal a shallow storage compartment, originally intended for small personal items such as sewing notions or embroidery work. The fabric straps that once supported the lid when open are currently broken, though they could be easily repaired or replaced if desired. Age-related wear and discoloration to the upholstery, with cracks and losses to the wood seat frame, consistent with age and use.
Beautifully versatile, the stool works equally well as a footstool beside a reading chair, a low perch in a dressing room, or a small accent table when topped with a tray, bringing texture and warmth to a living room, library, or entry. The combination of dark wood and mellow needlepoint lends a collected, layered feeling, quietly anchoring both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
