19th-century French tall decorative hat box 27½"

This delightful tall French hatbox dates from the Second Empire period in the mid-nineteenth century. The original hand-painted paper with red floral motifs on a yellow background wraps around the cylinder-shaped carton. The top is made from wood with a sturdy bronze knob on top and braided colorful rope handles on either side that are more recent. The base is wrapped in metal to protect the structure of the piece. Today, this charming container be used as a decorative display, for storage, or left open as an umbrella holder for dry umbrellas or walking sticks at the front door.
