19th-Century French Turned-Wood Mortar and Pestle Set - 4"

This handsome turned-wood mortar and pestle set likely dates from the 19th century. The mortar is simply worked with a gently flared rim, restrained concentric bands and a small circular foot, giving it a pleasing, well-balanced profile. The wood shows natural variation in grain and tone, together with traces of use, light staining and small age-related marks that add depth to the surface. The interior bears clear evidence of repeated grinding, recording its long practical use.

The accompanying pestle has a broad cylindrical working end and a long, comfortably shaped handle finished with delicate turned rings. The wood has become beautifully smooth through handling, with further wear and a small age-related split to the working end.
