This superb, large, yellow-glazed terracotta walnut oil jar dates from the late eighteenth / early nineteenth century. It is beautifully decorated with 'doigtier' ornamentation in an S-pattern down the sides and around the spout - a technique where the potter presses into the clay to make a chain like pattern. There are three ribbed handles and a pouring spout.
It is a lovely size - larger than usual and in very good condition considering its age. A splendid addition to a collection of pottery or transformed into a table lamp to add illuminate your home with French charm. If being used as a vase, a watertight container needs to be put inside.
