This 19th-century Tuscan refectory-style wooden torchère is constructed from three shaped vertical planks joined beneath a small round top, creating a tall, architectural silhouette. The flat circular top would originally have held a pricket for a candle; this was later removed, allowing the piece to function as a pedestal. It is hand-painted with loose arabesques in muted red and green over a dark olive ground, enhancing its folk appeal. Its simple construction is highly expressive, with the three shaped boards creating a tall, architectural silhouette ideal for displaying a small sculpture or trailing plant, or topped with a substantial candle to echo its original function. The timeworn paint, visible grain and loosely hand-painted ornament give it a warm, rustic folk character, while the narrow footprint makes it especially easy to place in an entryway, beside a fireplace or in a quiet corner.
