This charming 21-piece French fish dinner service, dating from around the 1950s–1960s, was made by the Sarreguemines pottery in eastern France. Crafted from molded glazed earthenware, each piece features a playful fish design, with beautifully defined scales, fins, tails and expressive little faces. The rich, earthy olive-green glaze has warm golden undertones, pooling into darker shades around the raised details. The set comprises twelve large plates, six smaller bowls, a generous fish-shaped serving platter, a covered soup tureen and a sauceboat with a curled tail handle. The Sarreguemines France mark appears on the underside. The glaze shows some fine crazing and light traces of use consistent with age.
There is something delightfully playful about this service, which belongs to the tradition of French fish and bouillabaisse dinnerware. The expressive shapes and deep, mellow color give it plenty of character, while the glossy finish beautifully catches the light. It would make a wonderful setting for a relaxed seafood lunch or a generous bouillabaisse. Equally charming on display, the fish-shaped plates could be arranged on a kitchen dresser or hung on a wall, while the large platter and tureen would make beautiful decorative accents on open shelves.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
