This charming bird waterer is hand-thrown in unglazed white terracotta, its ovoid body finished with a rounded finial at the crown, likely intended to take a rope for hanging. A hooded front niche shelters the small drinking basin, fed by a single opening that serves both for filling and controlled release. The clay has a soft, chalky hue with natural mineral speckling and subtle surface irregularities that speak to its handmade origin. Likely produced in southern France and dating to the early to mid-20th century, it remains in good, timeworn condition, with scattered marks and light edge wear consistent with outdoor use.
Rural potteries across the Mediterranean produced similar utilitarian vessels for farmyards and dovecotes, where porous clay helped keep water cool through evaporation. The simple single-hole system relies on air pressure so the reservoir replenishes the cup as birds drink, while suspension kept the water cleaner than ground-level bowls. Its quiet silhouette and honest material reflect the practical craftsmanship of village workshops, where forms were shaped by daily use rather than ornament.
Today it makes a charming and practical addition to a garden, terrace, or covered porch. Hang it from a natural rope in a tree or pergola, or place it on a low wall or terrace shelf, where it can be used as intended while adding a gentle, timeworn rustic note to the outdoor setting.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
