A French Late 19th-Century Louis XV Style Walnut Adjustable Piano Stool- 19¾"

This petite adjustable piano stool from the late 19th century is crafted in walnut with a round, swivel seat reupholstered in a restrained floral damask in soft champagne beige. The seat is edged with brass nailhead trim above a scalloped apron carved with delicate floral details, touched with subtle gilt highlights. Four cabriole legs with scroll feet support the frame, while a turned central screw column allows height adjustment.

The walnut shows a warm color and gentle sheen. Condition is very good with light rubbing to the gilding, and minor surface marks to the wood, the upholstery in excellent order. Piano stools of this type were developed to provide comfortable, adjustable seating for salon music and domestic instruments as the piano became a centerpiece of bourgeois interiors in the 19th century. The curving silhouette and carved ornament draw on the Rococo vocabulary associated with the reign of Louis XV, revived with enthusiasm in the later nineteenth century. Walnut was favored for its workable grain and refined finish, and the restrained gilding reflects the taste for discreet luxury found in Belle Époque furnishings.

This versatile stool suits a music room beside an upright or grand, but it also works beautifully as a dressing-table seat, a low accent in a bedroom, or a handy perch in an entry.
