A sculptural pair of burl wood table lamps by Jansen from the 1940s. The turned urn shafts display a warm honey tone with lively burl figuring, set on stepped square plinths with ebonized accents. Each is topped with a tailored black rectangular shade that sharpens the silhouette and tempers the glow. Light surface wear to the wood and a few small marks to the shades, consistent with age; one lamp has been slightly shortened by trimming a portion of the upper shaft.
Maison Jansen, founded in Paris in 1880, was among the most influential decorating firms of the 20th century, responsible for interiors ranging from grand European townhouses to prominent international commissions. Celebrated for its refined use of materials, disciplined proportions, and a neoclassical vocabulary adapted to modern contexts, the firm produced furnishings that balanced architectural presence with decorative flair. For these very qualities, Jansen pieces remain highly sought after today, valued for their timeless elegance and effortless ability to harmonize with both historic and contemporary interiors.
Place them symmetrically on an entry console, on nightstands for a smart, balanced bedroom, or flanking a sofa to anchor a living room. The burl veneer and restrained lines bring a calm, tailored warmth that suits both traditional and modern settings, lending quiet glamour and a collected finish.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
