Antique advertising bistro match striker - Rocher Frères

A charming French advertising match striker of the early 20th century, formed with a broad circular foot and a tapering, ribbed cone rising to a small match well. The base and rim are finished in a deep cobalt glaze, encircled by transfer lettering for Rocher Frères Cherry Brandy, while the cone remains unglazed biscuit for striking.

Such bar-top strikers appeared on café and bistro counters from the late 19th century into the 1920s, when distilleries and breweries commissioned everyday publicité to keep their names literally at hand.
