A charming French advertising match striker of the early 20th century, formed with a broad circular foot and a tapering, ribbed cone rising to a small match well. The base and rim are finished in a deep cobalt glaze, encircled by transfer lettering for Rocher Frères Cherry Brandy, while the cone remains unglazed biscuit for striking.
Such bar-top strikers appeared on café and bistro counters from the late 19th century into the 1920s, when distilleries and breweries commissioned everyday publicité to keep their names literally at hand. The Rocher Frères name relates to the long-established French liqueur house later known as Cherry Rocher.
Display it on a home bar or drinks trolley beside cut crystal and vintage siphons, where the cobalt ground adds a smart accent. On a mantel or kitchen shelf it serves as a ready holder for taper or candle matches, lending authentic pubware character to traditional or contemporary interiors. It also makes a charming desk accessory for wooden splints, becoming a small yet evocative nod to early 20th century hospitality.
Several similar match strikers are available for individual purchase if you wish to build a collection.
