Vintage Andalusian green-glazed water or wine jug, likely by Tito, Úbeda - 12½"

A superb vintage water or wine jug from Úbeda in Andalusia, likely from the celebrated Tito pottery workshop. Wheel-thrown in terracotta, it has a wonderfully generous rounded form, sculptural loop handle and an exceptionally rich deep green glaze.

The surface is articulated with fine horizontal throwing lines, giving the glaze beautiful texture and movement and emphasising the hand-worked character of the piece. Small areas of exposed terracotta and subtle variations in the glaze add further depth and authenticity.

The Tito workshop was founded in Úbeda by Juan Martínez Villacañas, known as Juan Tito, in 1965, and became renowned for preserving and revitalising the traditional pottery of the region. Juan Tito received Spain's National Crafts Award in 2006 and was recognised by the Junta de Andalucía as a Maestro Artesano in 2011.

Dating from the second half of the twentieth century, this is a striking example of Andalusian vernacular pottery. Originally intended for water or wine, its beautifully balanced proportions and extraordinary saturated green glaze make it just as compelling as a decorative object today.
