A refined Dutch cushion-frame mirror dating to around 1700, with a richly articulated frame combining warm walnut veneer, ebonized ripple moldings and fine ivory stringing. Seen in profile, the frame has the characteristic projecting, stepped construction of Dutch cushion mirrors, with alternating bands that give it considerable depth. Repeated guilloché or ripple-cut moldings sharpen the edges, while the narrow ivory lines provide a restrained contrast to the dark woods. The lightly beveled mercury glass retains a softly scintillating surface with fine age-related spotting. The reverse reveals the substantial, straightforward construction beneath the refined façade, with broad wooden boards enclosing the mirror plate and traces of earlier fixings and hanging points.
By around 1700, finely made mirrors had become important furnishings in prosperous Dutch interiors, ranging from relatively intimate examples to large architectural pieces conceived as significant elements of a room. This example belongs to the more refined tradition of Dutch cabinetmaking, where warm walnut, dark ebonized moldings and fine pale stringing were combined with extraordinary precision. Its mercury plate is particularly appealing: many surviving period frames have since received replacement glass, while here the softly scintillating surface contributes an important sense of age and authenticity.
In a contemporary interior, the disciplined geometry of the frame feels remarkably sophisticated. The repeated ripple moldings and fine lines have an almost graphic clarity, balanced by the warmth of the walnut and the subtle shimmer of the old glass. Against plaster, stone or pared-back furnishings, it would bring the refinement and cultivated atmosphere of a historic Dutch interior without feeling overly formal or ornate.
