Antique Elkington & Co. Victorian Silver-Plated Tea and Coffee Service

A striking Victorian four-piece silver-plated tea and coffee service by Elkington & Co., dated 1866. The service comprises baluster-form vessels with softly fluted bodies and shallow lobing, the sugar bowl of wider, more open profile, each richly hand-chased and engraved. The teapot and coffee pot are fitted with domed hinged lids topped by fluted knop finials, elegant S-curved spouts and finely shaped scrolling handles with thumb rests. The sugar bowl and cream jug echo the same rhythmic paneling and sit gracefully on low, spreading bases, their interiors retaining traces of original gilding that softly catch the light. The surfaces display a bright, reflective sheen with gentle mellowing, highlighting the crispness of the ornament. In very good condition, with faint surface scratches, a few minor pin dents, and gentle rubbing to the interior gilding.

Elkington & Co., pioneers of electroplating in the 1830s and 1840s, transformed silver production by combining industrial precision with skilled hand-finishing, gaining international recognition at mid-19th-century exhibitions. This service reflects the Victorian taste for richly ornamented surfaces, where revived Rococo curves meet Gothic-inspired patterning in a lively interplay of styles. The gilded interiors, both practical and decorative, were intended to protect against corrosion while adding a warm, luxurious glow, underscoring the refinement and technical mastery for which the firm was celebrated.
