From the farmhouse at Chanteduc in Vaison-la-Romaine, this silver-plated asparagus tong is a small, beautifully made piece of French table silverware from an era when serving a single vegetable with elegance was considered entirely reasonable.
Formed from two flat, elongated arms joined by a spring mechanism, the tong is designed to grip a single asparagus spear and transfer it gracefully from serving dish to plate. Designed to mimic an asparagus spear, this is a classic "single-use object" from Patricia Wells's collection of culinary antiques.
In Provence, where asparagus season is a genuine occasion and Patricia has long celebrated the vegetable in her cooking and teaching, an object like this reflects the French instinct for treating good produce with corresponding care at the table. It would sit naturally in a collection of French table silver, arranged in a linen-lined drawer alongside other serving pieces, or brought out at a spring lunch where a bundle of white or green asparagus deserves its own moment.
Light wear.
