Carved from limestone, this late 19th-century French planter is a substantial rectangular trough with a flat back designed to sit flush against a wall. The thick, slightly overhanging rim is carved with a rope-twist molding, while rectangular cartouches ornament three sides.  The stone displays a softly weathered pale gray surface enriched by moss and lichen, giving it a mottled, timeworn patina that speaks of decades outdoors. A letter or number is incised near one corner, perhaps a later inventory mark.
Originally serving as a practical garden trough for herbs or seasonal flowers, the flat reverse also allows it to function as a basin set against a wall beneath a spout. Its noble proportions and natural surface make it a piece of enduring character and timeless garden charm. Set beneath a window, along a terrace wall, or at the turn of a garden path, it brings quiet structure  to plantings of box, lavender, rosemary, or trailing ivy. Indoors, line it with zinc and use it in a conservatory or garden room as a decorative planter. Its restrained classical profile pairs easily with country house, traditional, or contemporary settings, adding weight and texture to stone, gravel, or brick.
