This elegant French wall mirror dates from the late 19th century and features the pleasing contrast of an oval mirror plate set within a rectangular frame. Richly carved wood moldings surround the glass with scrolling foliate ornament, acanthus motifs, delicate beaded borders, and finely modeled corner flourishes that reflect the refined craftsmanship of the period. The frame was likely originally finished in gilt or ebonized wood and has more recently been refinished in a softly layered ivory patina, with warm beige undertones and delicately highlighted relief that beautifully emphasizes the richness of the carving. The mirror plate appears to have been replaced at some point and remains clear with only light foxing, complementing the mellow finish. The piece is in very good antique condition with minor wear consistent with its age.
The dialogue between the oval mirror and the rectilinear frame creates a pleasing sense of balance, softening the richness of the carved ornament. Whether hung above a console, chest of drawers, or vanity, its softly layered finish lends warmth and quiet romance to an interior, while its clear plate makes it perfectly suited for everyday use in a bathroom, powder room, or dressing area.
