Antique French Cast-Iron Fireback w/ Royal French Coat of Arms - 31½" x 30"

This antique French cast-iron fireback, probably dating from the 19th century, is beautifully decorated with the royal coat of arms of France. At its center, a circular shield displays three fleurs-de-lis, arranged two above and one below, surmounted by a closed royal crown. The heraldic composition is framed by elaborate ornamental chains and foliage, while generous scrolling motifs extend along either side, giving the plaque its distinctive shaped outline. The iron has a lovely, even dark patina with a clean, well-kept appearance that allows the richly modeled details to stand out. Subtle variations in tone and light wear remain visible, preserving its antique character. 

Originally designed to protect the back of a fireplace from intense heat, this handsome piece also has considerable decorative appeal. The combination of its bold architectural shape, royal symbolism and finely worked details makes it an interesting piece of French history. It would look beautiful in a traditional stone fireplace or mounted as an architectural decoration. Given its heavy weight, wall mounting would require appropriate heavy-duty fixings and a sufficiently strong supporting wall.
