An antique French cast-iron lidded casserole from the farmhouse kitchen at Chanteduc, Patricia and Walter Wells’s Provençal home. Its broad oval body with integral side handles is paired with a fitted oval lid crowned by an arched handle and neat concentric rings. The surface is a deep, work-worn black, richly seasoned by heat, with honest scuffs and a soft grey bloom that speaks of the wood fire. Generous in scale and reassuringly weighty, it settles with quiet authority on the range or by the hearth. Patricia explains, “It was in the house when we bought it, so it must be a zillion years old! I use it all the time in the wood-fired oven for stews and Provençal daube,” the traditional beef stew of Provence. Provenance is Chanteduc, where it has remained in active service, a tool that reflects her intelligent simplicity, love of markets, and shared tables.
