Antique French Ceramic Oil Lamp Converted to Table Lamp - 22½"

This elegant table lamp was created from an oil lamp dating to around 1880, with a softly colored ceramic body mounted on an ornate brass base. The ceramic has a baluster-like form in a pale celadon tone, enriched with finely painted gilt foliate motifs and small raised gilt details resembling applied beads, adding subtle relief across the surface. The decorative brass base and the preserved elements of the original oil-burning mechanism at the neck echo the warm gilding of the ceramic. The single light is topped with a broad custom-made shade in washed linen, in a warm ochre tone with a subtle olive-green cast, chosen to complement the gold tones of the decoration.

The lamp has been carefully converted and electrified in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence by a passionate specialist in historic lighting who works closely with Mathieu Lustrerie, the renowned Provençal atelier known internationally for the restoration and recreation of important historic lighting, including pieces for the Château de Versailles, Opéra Garnier and other major French monuments. Particular attention was paid to the quality and safety of the electrical work, while preserving the character of the original oil lamp.

The pale celadon ceramic, gilded ornament and raised detailing give the lamp a delicate, slightly bohemian character, while the broad olive-ochre washed-linen shade balances the decoration with a cleaner, more contemporary feel. The result feels layered and collected, bringing warmth, color and a touch of eclecticism to an interior.
