A charming hand-thrown French faïence bowl of unknown regional origin, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. The interior is hand-painted with folk-style motifs, featuring a central blue rosette surrounded by scattered blue dots and a softly brushed leafy garland below twin blue bands. The exterior is undecorated, finished in a simple white glaze that highlights the purity of its form. The creamy tin glaze displays a pleasing allover craquelure and gentle speckling, with subtle throwing irregularities that reveal the potter’s hand.
Lightweight yet sturdy, such bowls were used for preparation and serving, appreciated for their practical tin glaze and the charm of handmade variation that reflects regional savoir-faire. The base is pierced and fitted with a rope for hanging, for storage or decorative display.
Its gentle palette and weathered surface make it a beautiful accent in a country kitchen. It can be used as a fruit bowl or simple centerpiece on a farmhouse table, or hung on a wall to showcase its pleasing décor. Pair it with woven linens, wooden boards, and other faïence pieces to create an authentic French provincial ambiance that suits both traditional and contemporary interiors.
