An antique French yogurt advertising pot from Patricia and Walter Wells’s apartment in Paris. Crafted in ceramic with an off-white glaze and a softly rounded lip, it carries blue printed lettering on one side: “Yagourt Oriental, Dessert Exquis,” translated as “Oriental Yogurt, exquisite dessert.” The base is stamped PL Pont aux Vernes, a touchstone of French utilitarian pottery. This pot is featured on p.18 of The French Kitchen Cookbook, by Patricia Wells. Wells, an authority on French food and culture, prizes objects that earn their keep. She smiles that it is a “cute old pot to keep pens.” One can picture it near her notebooks after market mornings or by the stove in Provence, a small companion to the rhythms of cooking and teaching at Chanteduc. Its restrained color and simple silhouette sit comfortably in both Parisian and Provençal rooms. Wonderfully decorative and useful, it is ready for pens and brushes, tasting spoons, or a small posy from the garden. Place it on open kitchen shelves, a writing desk, or a nightstand to bring a modest, authentic fragment of everyday French life into the home.
