An unusual late 19th or early 20th-century suspended cradle from the Cévennes region, made from chestnut in the straightforward, well-proportioned tradition of French folk furniture. The rectangular frame is enclosed by broad vertical slats and finished with turned corner posts, each retaining its original iron suspension ring. A further ring at the center of the front would have allowed the cradle to be rocked gently. The warm, deeply aged surface brings out the varied tones of the chestnut, while small irregularities and traces of use give the piece an honest, lived-in character. The original iron reinforcing straps remain in place and show wear consistent with age. Suspended from ceiling beams, the cradle could originally be rocked while keeping the child raised from the floor.

Its strong geometry and simple construction give it considerable decorative potential today. Left standing, it could hold logs beside a fireplace, magazines, or a collection of pots; suspended again, it becomes an unusual hanging shelf. The combination of warm chestnut, original iron fittings, and unmistakable folk-art character gives the piece a particularly appealing presence, whether used in a rustic setting or as an unexpected accent in a more contemporary interior.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
