This lovely little French footstool, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, stands out for its wonderfully individual, handworked tapestry upholstery. The generously padded rectangular seat features a simple geometric design, with black lines forming a grid of checks in soft pink, cream, ocher and muted green. Reminiscent of traditional domestic needlework and antique patchwork quilts, the fabric has a beautiful, old-fashioned country feel. The wooden frame has graceful Louis XV-inspired curves, with a shaped apron and short cabriole legs, while a row of aged brass studs finishes the upholstery. The wood has a warm brown patina, with light marks and wear consistent with age. The tapestry shows some fading and variations in color, which contribute to its authentic, timeworn appearance. A stenciled number is visible beneath the frame.
This footstool has the nostalgic, homespun appeal of traditional domestic needlework, recalling a time when even the simplest household objects were decorated by hand with care and imagination. Its modest proportions and softly aged colors would feel right at home beside a worn leather armchair in a library or a comfortable fireside chair, adding a little warmth and the relaxed, lived-in atmosphere of an old country house.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
