A superb French green tôle émaillée rise-and-fall pendant light with a shallow flared dome shade and tubular neck from the late nineteenth century. The exterior is a bottle-green vitreous enamel with a fine black-edged rim; the interior is bright white for strong reflectivity. It retains its ovoid white ceramic counterweight and twisted suspension cord, with a small porcelain guide.
These adjustable counterweight suspensions were often found in ateliers, cafés and domestic kitchens, allowing the shade to be raised and lowered for task lighting. The durable tôle émaillée construction reflects the practical savoir-faire of French éclairage industriel of the period, marrying utilitarian lines with a restrained palette typical of early factory fittings. The white interior was intentionally specified to amplify light over work surfaces, while the green exterior softened glare and harmonized with timber and stone in rural interiors.
Perfect above a farmhouse table, kitchen island or workbench, this pendant adds authentic French country character to contemporary spaces and historic restorations alike. Hang singly as a focal point in a mudroom or pantry, or repeat in a line over a long counter for even illumination. Its adjustable counterweight makes it especially useful over a desk or potting bench where versatile, directed light is desired.
