Antique French Industrial Lantern in Green-Painted Metal - 25¼"

A late 19th-century French industrial lantern showcasing a distinctive architectural silhouette and retaining its beautifully weathered green-painted finish. Originally designed for outdoor or railway-related use, the lantern features a rectilinear body with slightly sloped upper panels topped by a vented chimney cap. The front retains its original maker’s label bearing the name “Summa,” while embossed cross motifs and small ball finials soften the otherwise utilitarian design with discreet decorative detailing.  Though conceived as a hanging lantern, with a metal mounting bar still present at the back for wall attachment, it also rests on four small ball feet echoing the upper finials in an elegant sense of symmetry, allowing it to be displayed equally well as a freestanding object.

The original glass panels were replaced at some point with coloured plexiglass, whose scratched and timeworn surface now contributes to the lantern’s distinctive character. The front pane notably bears a hand-scratched heart motif, a touching trace of its long history and use. For those preferring a more refined appearance, the plexiglass panels could easily be replaced with new glass panes.

While no longer functional in its current state, the lantern remains structurally sound and highly decorative, and could easily be rewired and electrified if desired. It could also be used to house candles, creating a warm atmospheric glow through the softly tinted panels. With its weathered green surface and richly timeworn character, it would bring a strong sense of atmosphere to a covered terrace, garden room, entry hall, or rustic interior, recalling the quiet poetry of old French stations, passageways, and country houses.
