Antique French Iron Fireplace Cooking Grill

An antique French iron fireplace cooking grill from the main kitchen at Chanteduc, long arranged with its companions on the range in Patricia Wells’s signature yellow cuisine (kitchen). Round and delicately made of slender iron rods bound with fine twists, it stands on four light feet and lifts with a loop handle. The iron shows a soft, time-earned patina with discreet traces of the hearth. From Patricia’s personal collection, it reflects the intelligence and generosity of her life in food as a journalist, restaurant critic, cookbook author, and cooking school founder. She calls it fragile, a quality felt in the airy spacing of the bars and its lightness. Intended for toasting bread by the fire, Patricia recalls being told that such light wirework was fashioned by prisoners, and she found this example years ago at the Sunday brocante (flea market) in Vaison, Provence. Today it suits gentle service, a small tray for fruit, herbs, or petits fours (small pastries), or a trivet beneath a small pot. Its intimate scale makes it at home beside a cutting board, perched on a mantel, or displayed with other wirework on a peg rail. In a teaching kitchen it invites conversation about resourcefulness and craft, or set in the garden to air-dry thyme after the market.
