Antique French Jardinière w/ Sculpted Ebonized Wood Frame and Hand-Painted Ceramic Panels - 39½" x 32¾"

This wonderfully decorative French Napoleon III jardinière, dating from the second half of the 19th century, combines richly carved ebonized wood with hand-painted glazed ceramic panels. The dark wooden structure is particularly imaginative, carved to imitate twisting branches, stems and leaves, with naturalistic supports and an interlaced stretcher below that give the piece an almost woodland character. The front and sides are inset with ceramic panels painted with generous hibiscus blooms against a pale, misty forest background, while the reverse is fitted with a pale marble panel with darker charcoal veining, adding another refined material contrast and making the jardinière decorative from every angle. The original zinc liner remains inside, weathered but still functional, helping to protect the surrounding wood from moisture when small pots are placed within. The jardinière remains stable, while the ebonized wood shows gentle rubbing and minor age-related marks that add to its antique character.

The combination of naturalistic carving, painted ceramics and marble gives the piece a romantic, rather poetic quality, very much rooted in the decorative spirit of the period. There is a gentle sense of nostalgia to it, but also enough sculptural presence to make it stand out in almost any interior. It would be especially at home in a bohemian or richly layered setting, and make a memorable feature in an entrance hall, garden room or between doors, either filled with trailing greenery or left empty.
