A large French armchair in the Louis XIII style, dating from the late 19th century and likely made from walnut. It has a tall, straight back, broad seat, scrolling open arms, and boldly turned legs joined by substantial turned stretchers. Carved floral details punctuate the blocks of the legs, while the arm supports are formed as distinctive spiral columns. The hand-carved construction is visible in small irregularities throughout the frame, notably in the slightly differing proportions of the spiral arm supports. The original upholstery has been removed, leaving visible old upholstery tack holes along the frame. There are also some old worm holes consistent with its age and rustic construction. The chair is large and stable, with an upright yet relatively comfortable seat and a generous 20½ in. (52 cm) width between the arms.
Its generous proportions and tall architectural silhouette give this armchair considerable presence without feeling overly formal. The warm, aged wood, traces of former upholstery, and simple natural-colored fabric emphasize its rustic character. It can be enjoyed as it is, or reupholstered in a fabric of choice for a more finished appearance. Beside a fireplace, in a bedroom, or at the end of a large country table, it would bring the atmosphere of an old French interior to a contemporary setting.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
