Antique French Mahogany Travailleuse with Painted Maritime Decoration, c. 1860 - 29¼"

A wonderfully ingenious French travailleuse (work table) dating to around 1860, crafted in mahogany with a beautifully timeworn black painted finish. Combining a sewing table, writing desk, dressing table, and side table in one compact design, it is filled with clever hidden compartments and practical features. Standing on elegant cabriole legs joined by a shaped stretcher and terminating in carved paw feet resting on turned feet, it features a hinged lid decorated with a finely painted maritime scene depicting a sailing ship, compass rose, and map, lending the table an evocative spirit of travel and exploration. 

The lid opens to reveal a fitted interior lined in richly figured mahogany veneer, complete with a mirror and two hinged side compartments concealing a small candlestick on one side and a silk pin cushion on the other. A spacious lower drawer provides additional storage, divided into compartments for writing accessories. 

The beautifully worn black painted finish has mellowed gracefully over time, with gentle rubbing and scattered losses revealing the warm mahogany beneath, adding depth and character. The original mirror displays light age-related speckling, while a handful of discreet restorations, most notably around the mirror surround, reflect the table's long history of careful use and preservation. Retaining its working lock and key, the table is presented in good antique condition. 

The unusual maritime decoration makes this travailleuse particularly distinctive. Passed down through the family of a Provençal maritime captain, it evokes the great age of sail and would make a fascinating addition to a study, library, bedroom, or sitting room. Whether used to store jewellery, sewing materials, or writing implements, its ingenious interior and rich patina ensure it is as captivating to discover as it is to admire.
