This antique French confit pot has the generous rounded form and practical twin handles associated with traditional storage vessels from southern France. The upper half is covered in a warm ochre glaze, while the lower body was deliberately left unglazed, a characteristic feature of utilitarian confit pots that conserved glaze where it was most needed. Irregular drips run down into the raw terracotta below, giving the surface a particularly expressive quality. Years of use have left their mark in the form of crazing, scattered glaze losses, chips around the rim and handles, surface wear and darkened areas, giving the pot a richly rustic character that is very much part of its appeal.
Displayed on a kitchen worktop, open shelving, a console or among a collection of old ceramics, it would bring warmth and texture to an interior, while its imperfect glaze and exposed terracotta make each angle slightly different. It could be left empty as an object in its own right or used decoratively with dried branches or flowers, with a liner inserted if water is used.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
