Evoking the quiet grace of provincial workshops, this hand-painted papier-mâché milliner’s mannequin head presents a serene female face with softly modeled features and expressive dark eyes. The gentle polychromy is rendered in warm, muted tones, with the face framed by a beige kerchief that continues gracefully as a wrapped scarf. A delicate floral collar animates the blue and white bodice. The figure rests on its original petite painted wooden stand, which enhances its sculptural presence and sense of balance.
Dating to the late 19th century, this adult-scale example belongs to a tradition that emerged in the late 18th century, when milliners and laundresses relied on head forms to keep linen caps and headdresses pressed and properly shaped. Each was individually painted, giving every model its own character. The surface shows a softly timeworn patina with scattered abrasions and areas of paint loss, all consistent with age and long use, and contributing to its authentic charm.
Display it on a console, dressing table, or bookshelf as a lyrical piece of folk sculpture that brings warmth and gentle character to a room. It is especially striking when grouped with other mannequin heads, creating a layered, collected display with strong visual presence. In a boutique or bedroom, it can still serve its original purpose as a stand for a cap or scarf, or hold a strand of beads that echoes the painted floral collar.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
