Antique French Savoyard Ceramic Pitcher w/ Colorful Geometric Decoration - 6¼"

This handsome Savoyard ceramic pitcher likely dates from the early to mid-20th century and is distinguished by an unusually rich arrangement of hand-painted geometric friezes. Bands of deep blue, green, terracotta and dark brown stand out against the warm cream-colored glaze, creating a lively rhythm around the cylindrical body. Its form is characteristic of traditional Savoie pottery, with a simple loop handle and a spout shaped by pinching the rim by hand, leaving the slight irregularities that give the piece much of its character. Light wear to the glaze is consistent with age and use.  

Savoyard pottery was made principally for everyday domestic use, but its simple forms were often enlivened with bold painted decoration, giving them a distinctive and appealing charm. The density and contrast of the ornament make this pitcher particularly decorative. It would bring color and folk character to open kitchen shelving or a collection of regional ceramics, and could equally be used as a vase for a small arrangement of flowers.
