Antique French Secrétaire Desk Louis XV

Patricia and Walter still remember the moment they spotted this secretaire at the brocante in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue — and it's not hard to see why it stopped them in their tracks.

A French provincial secretaire, likely in pine and walnut — this is an unusually practical form: a slant-front writing desk above, with cupboard doors below, designed to keep correspondence and household papers neatly out of sight. The front face is arranged with two small upper drawers flanking a central panel, a wider drawer beneath, and modest brass knob and bail hardware throughout. A small decorative brass escutcheon centres the slant lid. A scalloped apron runs along the base, and the piece stands on gently curved cabriole legs — provincial Louis XV in spirit, unpretentious and well-proportioned. The warm patina is the kind that only comes with decades of use.

They found it at the Sunday brocante in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, the canal-threaded Vaucluse town that has become one of France's most celebrated antiques destinations. Its permanent antiques villages and weekly market draw dealers and collectors from across Europe, making it a reliable hunting ground for exactly this kind of honest, characterful provincial piece. At Chanteduc, the secretaire has lived for decades, most recently in the dining room. In a contemporary home, it works equally well as a writing desk, a drinks station or a sideboard — a piece with genuine history and the warm, lived-in patina that no reproduction can replicate.
