Dating from the end of the nineteenth or start of the twentieth century, this charming antique French glazed terracotta footed bowl or 'tourne omelet' features a pretty maroon glaze with decorative beige patterns. It was likely was made in the Drôme region of France, perhaps Dieulefit. It is used for turning an omelet out on a plate once cooked - a fun piece of French culinary culture. A lovely piece to display fruit and add a touch of the south of France to your home.
Pottery in Dieulefit, a town in southeastern France, boasts a history dating back to the Middle Ages, thanks to the region's high-quality clay. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Dieulefit became known for its functional wares like jars and bowls, decorated with rustic Provencal designs. The 20th century saw a revival, with artists innovating new forms and glazes while honoring traditional methods. This blend of historical craftsmanship and artistic experimentation has cemented Dieulefit's reputation in the world of ceramics.
