Antique French 'sourde' Lantern 16¼"

This charming 'Lantern sourde' or deaf lantern dates from the nineteenth century. It is named this way as it emits very little light. Made from iron with a black patina. It can be used in three positions - carried with the handle, hanging from the loop at the top or propped on a stick support.
