An antique terracotta resin-collecting pot from the pine forests of Les Landes in southwestern France. Suspended from pine trees beneath a large incision in the bark, it was used to collect sap during the traditional gemmage process. Hand-thrown in a simple conical form, it features a warm honey-to-olive glazed interior and an unglazed exterior enriched by decades of use and weathering. Two small perforations beneath the rim allowed it to be secured in place, while the lower body bears the mark J. Meyer. Beautifully weathered, with a rich patina, old accretions, firing marks, and minor losses to the rim, it retains all the character of its working life in the forests of Les Landes.
Once an essential tool of the resin harvest, this humble vessel embodies the vernacular craftsmanship of rural southwestern France. Today, its sculptural form and beautifully weathered surface make it a striking decorative accent on open shelving or a console table. It can be repurposed as a catchall, used to display walnuts or garlic in a kitchen, or hung by its original perforations on a peg rail for an authentic touch of French country character. A piece that brings warmth, texture, and a tangible connection to rural life into both rustic and contemporary interiors.
