This large French trumeau mirror, dating from the late 18th century, has a pale gray painted wooden frame with delicate gilded moldings. The upper section features an oil on canvas depicting a lively garden scene, with children in period dress playing among the trees, bringing movement and a gentle touch of humor. Below, the large rectangular mirror plate remains relatively clear, although scattered foxing and areas of desilvering give the glass a softly aged quality. The pale gray paint and gilding show gentle rubbing, fine cracks and small losses consistent with age, while the painting remains in generally good condition.
The lively scene of children at play brings a playful note to this otherwise classical trumeau, while the pale French gray finish, mellow gilding and beautifully aged glass give it a soft, atmospheric quality. Its generous proportions would make it particularly appealing above a fireplace or antique chest, adding a touch of color, history and charm to an interior.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
