This antique terracotta poêlon was produced in Vallauris in the late 19th to early 20th century. Its surface is finished in a pale yellow glaze with soft blue swirl decoration, a restrained variation of the traditional jaspe technique characteristic of the region’s pottery. The interior is glazed clear, allowing the warm tone of the natural clay to remain visible. Functional in form, it features a large hollow handle and a small spout for pouring. Pieces like this were used for preparing and serving rustic Provençal dishes directly from the fire, note the heat wear underneath. The side bears the impressed mark “VALLAURIS AM.” The piece is structurally intact but best suited for decorative use due to its age. Several similar pieces are available for separate purchase.
Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
