This handsome French antique coffee grinder, c. 1900, is distinguished by its warm reddish-brown wooden body, likely walnut, and the elegant contrast of polished brass fittings. The gently shaped case is raised on four small rounded feet and fitted with a single front drawer to collect the ground coffee. Above, a broad brass hopper supports the hand-cranked mechanism, with a shaped brass handle and turned finials adding a refined decorative note. The wood has developed a rich, softly worn surface with darker areas from age and handling, while the brass retains a pleasing shine. A fine age-related crack is visible along one side, but it remains discreet within the overall appearance of the piece.
These compact grinders were made for domestic coffee preparation, with the beans fed through the upper hopper and the grounds collected in the drawer below. Today, the combination of warm wood and gleaming brass gives this example particular decorative appeal, making it a beautiful accent on a kitchen counter or open shelving alongside antique pottery, copperware or other pieces of traditional kitchen equipment.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
