Antique French Walnut Corner Cabinet with Bow Front

This antique French corner cabinet has stood at the heart of Chanteduc — Patricia and Walter Wells's farmhouse and cooking school near Vaison-la-Romaine — since the very beginning. Patricia recalls discovering it already in residence when they arrived: "It was in the pigeonnier when we moved here. Now it's full of liquor!" Promoted from dovecote to dining room, it has served as Chanteduc's drinks cupboard ever since, and anyone who has spent time at the farmhouse will recognise it immediately — one of those pieces that feels genuinely inseparable from the house. Crafted from walnut, the cabinet carries the warm, deep-brown patina that only comes with real age and long use. Its curved, bow-fronted form is characteristic of French provincial furniture at its most considered — practical in a corner, yet shapely enough to hold its own in a room. Two arched raised-panel doors, framed with moulded detail, meet at a central stile with a small keyhole escutcheon, and the whole piece rests on turned bun feet. The wood grain is rich and varied, the surface bearing the honest marks of a long and useful life. In a contemporary interior, this cabinet would be equally at home storing glassware, linens or, naturally, a well-chosen collection of bottles.
