At the heart of Chanteduc, Patricia and Walter's farmhouse in Vaison-la-Romaine, this antique walnut dining table has presided over decades of remarkable meals. Patricia recalls, "We must have bought that in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue about forty years ago, and we've used it happily ever since" — and the table shows every year of that happy use in the best possible way. The warm, honey-toned walnut has developed the kind of mellow, even patina that only comes from real life: cooking school lunches, Provençal feasts, friends gathered around Patricia's food season after season.
The table is beautifully practical as well as beautiful. Round at its smallest, it draws people together for an intimate gathering; add the additional leaves and it extends into a generous, longer table ready for a larger occasion. The turned legs — elegantly proportioned with their classic bobbin-and-baluster profiles — run down to castors, making the whole piece surprisingly easy to move and reconfigure. Even the protective cover, Patricia notes, was custom-made in New York: a small detail that speaks to how seriously this table was always taken. Antique walnut of this quality and warmth is not easily found.
In a contemporary home, this table would be equally at ease in a relaxed kitchen-dining room or a dedicated entertaining space — compact and convivial for everyday life, expanded for the occasions that call for something more. It is, in the truest sense, a table that knows exactly what it is for, and carries with it the culinary history of one of the most celebrated tables in Provence.
