Antique French Walnut Salt Box w/ Carved Floral Motif

This antique French salt box “salier” or “boîte à sel” from the early 20th century is a classic example of Provençal kitchenware. Handcrafted from solid walnut with a rich, aged patina, it features a hinged lid that opens to reveal a compartment traditionally used for storing coarse salt. Below, a small drawer provides additional space, often used for spices or finely ground salt. 

The front panel is beautifully adorned with a finely carved floral bouquet in a basket, a typical motif of southern French craftsmanship. The tall, shaped back is crowned with a carved daisy, echoing the floral theme. Elegant curved lines define the body, with side panels featuring scalloped molding. The piece stands on graceful out-turned legs ending in hooved acanthus-carved feet, showcasing the detailed woodwork associated with Provençal furniture. Both decorative and functional, it offers a glimpse into traditional French rural life.
